Searching the Portage County Court Docket
Start a Portage County court docket search at Wisconsin Circuit Court Access, the state system most people call WCCA or CCAP. Portage County keeps no case-history database of its own, so the docket lives in this statewide circuit system. Filtering by county is essential once you begin.
- Open WCCA and choose a simple or advanced search.
- Enter the full case number when known, or search by first and last name.
- Select Portage County and narrow broad results by case type or date.
- Match the case number, party role, filing date, branch, and status before opening a result.
- Read the chronological case history and newest scheduled activity, then contact the clerk if the filed document is needed.
No internet at home? The courthouse has you covered. Public WCCA computers sit in the second-floor access room. A same-day kiosk lists circuit cases scheduled for hearing that day. The clerk also takes requests in person, by mail, email, fax, or phone, whichever suits you. A Portage County case lookup goes fastest when you first pin down which court holds the case.
Portage County WCCA Search Fields
No internet at home? The courthouse has public WCCA computers in the second-floor access room. A same-day kiosk there lists circuit cases set for hearing today. You can also ask the clerk directly. Requests work in person, by mail, email, fax, or phone. Before any Portage County case lookup, figure out which court actually holds the case. That step saves time and wrong turns.
| Field | Control | Search use |
|---|---|---|
| Party or last name | Text | Broad name route; add first name when useful |
| Case number | Text | Best locator for one known case |
| County | Dropdown | Select Portage |
| Case type | Filter | Narrow criminal, civil, family, probate, traffic, or small claims |
| Court official | Dropdown | Limit by branch when exposed |
| Filing range | Date fields | Reduce a long result list |
WCCA sometimes shows a CAPTCHA to slow automated scraping. Your phone browser may get stuck on the challenge. If so, switch to a standard browser or use the courthouse terminal. Searching is free for the public. Online payment fees sit apart from the docket search. The official WCCA landing interface is the public entry point for Portage County searches.

This screen is the statewide gateway for a Portage County docket search, not a paid people finder.
Inside a Portage County Court Docket
Think of a Portage County case history as a timeline of court activity. Each entry marks a step. It shows what was filed and when a hearing is set. It also names which branch holds the matter. Whether a judgment or disposition was entered appears there too. Which fields show up depends on the case type and its public status.
| Case number | Filing year, Wisconsin case-type code, and sequence, such as 2024CV000370. |
|---|---|
| Parties and roles | Public names labeled plaintiff, petitioner, defendant, respondent, or State of Wisconsin. |
| Case type | Felony, misdemeanor, criminal traffic, civil, family, small claims, probate, or another class. |
| Court assignment | Portage County branch and court official when public. |
| Case history | Filings, appearances, motions, orders, judgments, sentence, payments, and appeal events. |
| Scheduled activity | Future date, time, branch, and event type. |
| Status | Open, closed, disposed, or a related status concept. |
An event line names an order or complaint but may not show the document image itself. Public users turn to the Clerk of Circuit Court for documents and transcripts. Parties with authorized access use Wisconsin eFiling instead.
Portage County Docket Number Codes
Start with the number, not the name. A Wisconsin case number opens with the year, then a code for the case type, then a fixed-width sequence. So 2024CF000545 shows the pattern in practice; it is a format sample, not a party record gathered from any Portage County docket.
- CF
- Felony circuit case.
- CM
- Misdemeanor circuit case.
- CT
- Criminal traffic circuit case.
- CV
- General civil matter.
- SC
- Small-claims matter.
- FA or PR
- Family or probate matter, subject to access limits.
No published dictionary spells out every event shorthand in Portage County. A short label could be an order, a motion, a continuation, or something else entirely, so open the full WCCA entry and read it instead of guessing. Bring the correct case number when you ask the clerk for a document. Doing that keeps a $5 search fee off your request.
Courts That Keep Dockets in Portage County
One trial court system serves the whole state, a structure Wisconsin has used since 1978. Portage County therefore skips the split some states rely on, where felony, civil, family, and probate dockets scatter across district and county courts. Instead, three circuit branches share that single trial jurisdiction. Below them sits the joint municipal court, a separate local venue of its own.
| Court | Docket covers | Where to search |
|---|---|---|
| Portage County Circuit Court | Criminal, civil, family, probate, juvenile, small claims, traffic, and forfeiture cases as assigned | WCCA, courthouse terminal, or circuit clerk |
| Circuit Court Commissioners | Assigned family, small-claims, and supplemental proceedings | WCCA and circuit clerk |
| Stevens Point/Plover Joint Municipal Court | Local ordinance and municipal-traffic cases | Municipal clerk; records are not online |
| Wisconsin Court of Appeals, District III | Appeals from Portage circuit cases | WSCCA appellate search |
Branch labels are administrative only. Assignment to Branch 1, Branch 2, or Branch 3 does not create a different kind of Portage County court docket, since any branch can take matters anywhere in the unified circuit jurisdiction. If a case moves between branches, the case number still ties every entry together.
Portage County's Three Docket Branches
The Portage County circuit directory names the three judges. Each one sits on the Portage County court docket. Branch 1 belongs to Judge Michael D. Zell. Branch 2 belongs to Judge Louis J. Molepske Jr. Branch 3 belongs to Judge Patricia A. Baker. All three hold court at the Portage County Courthouse. Call 715-346-1355, 715-346-1360, or 715-346-1244 to reach a branch clerk about a hearing or filing. The official directory lists each branch and the courthouse they share.

Call a branch line to confirm a setting or sort out a branch issue. General records, copies, and case-type routing belong with the clerk's office. Family Court Commissioner Sheila Kessler and Supplemental Court Commissioner Brandon Ruffalo take assigned commissioner proceedings, but those cases stay inside the circuit system.
How to Find Court Dates and Settings
Open the Portage County court docket in WCCA and find the newest future scheduled activity. An old appearance is not the current date. The record keeps past settings even after an adjournment, reset, or continuance. Trust a later order or activity as the better signal. For a hearing today, check the second-floor courthouse kiosk. It lists circuit cases on the day's calendar. Call the assigned branch when a date just changed. New criminal appearance details may not exist until the District Attorney files the matter. The county tells callers to try after 10:30 a.m. Remote appearance requests use GF-306 with the court's GF-307 order. A 48 hours' lead time is required locally. A criminal defendant also uses CR-295. The separate Portage County court dates resource walks through setting fields and resets. It also covers municipal initial appearances and missed dates.
Portage County CCAP Court History
Portage County joined Wisconsin's Consolidated Court Automation Programs in 1989. Its docket folded into a statewide court-technology system rather than a stand-alone local database. WCCA is the public view of that system. eFiling serves parties doing the actual filing. That split also explains a quirk. WCCA can show a complaint event without offering the complaint image. The Wisconsin CCAP office description covers public access, courthouse WCCA, eFiling, remote hearings, and courtroom technology. A public search still works well for dates and docket events. Document inspection belongs with the county clerk. The CCAP history also explains why the search structure here matches other Wisconsin circuit courts. What stays county-specific is the courthouse access room, the same-day kiosk, the local request form, branch contacts, and the municipal-court split.
Public Access to Court Dockets
Wisconsin aims for open court records within limits. State law and court rules draw the line between reasonable access and confidentiality. The Portage County Clerk of Circuit Court handles requests for circuit case files, while the Sheriff's open-records channel covers only law-enforcement records, so route your docket request to the clerk.
Public-access framework. Wis. Stat. § 19.35 addresses access to records; Wis. Stat. § 59.20(3) addresses inspection of county officer records; Wis. Sup. Ct. R. 72 governs retention; and Wisconsin court confidentiality rules protect specified material.
Not every Portage County court docket is open to the public. Juvenile cases and certain other confidential categories may be suppressed. Sealed matters, protected numbers, juror details, victim or citizen-witness fields, and sensitive addresses are protected. They can be hidden or redacted. Redaction simply removes protected information from the public copy. A blank WCCA result can stem from other causes. These include a recent filing, the wrong venue, or a misspelled name. Check with the correct clerk before assuming a record is sealed.
Portage County Docket Access Limits
Access to case information has limits. Filers must protect confidential data, and the clerk applies access codes and court orders. Parties can see documents through eFiling that public WCCA users cannot. The state protected-information FAQ spells out these lines.
A public Portage County court docket may still show that an order was entered. That holds even when part of the file is sealed or redacted. Court staff can explain the request procedure. They cannot advise whether someone has a legal right to restricted material. Any request beyond ordinary public access goes through the court's formal process.
WCCA works as a locator and case-history source. For an official copy, ask about certification and confirm the current fee. The Portage County sources post no certified-copy fee. Do not assume a dollar amount.
Docket Records at the Clerk's Office
Lisa M. Roth serves as the Portage County Clerk of Circuit Court. Her office keeps the circuit docket and case files. It also holds court finances, fines, forfeitures, jury records, and the rules for public access. You can reach it on the second floor of the Portage County Courthouse at 1516 Church Street. That is in Stevens Point, WI 54481-3598. Doors are open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Holidays are excluded.

Call the clerk and the phone tree sorts you out. Traffic and forfeiture questions go to option 4. Small claims go to 5, family and paternity to 6. Felony and misdemeanor matters hit 7. Civil and related matters go to 8, and accounting to 9. Press the pound key for anything general. Staff will explain procedure, though they cannot give legal advice. The official clerk page confirms the Portage County records office and its access tools.

The county page links WCCA, Zoom forms, language-access help, public computers, and department contacts.
Portage County Docket Request Channels
Older filings sometimes stump WCCA. For those, Portage County offers a Record Search/Document Request Form. One form covers one name. Along with that name, you can add a birth date, a case number, or a docket number. The case type helps too. Include a short description of the document you want, plus your contact and delivery details. The clerk uses these details to pull the court record. Send nothing extra; the form and the request only ask for what they need.
| Channel | How it works | Known cost |
|---|---|---|
| Online WCCA | Free public case history | No search charge |
| In person | Inspect or request at the clerk counter | Copies cost $1.25 per page |
| Send the form with check or money order | Postage may apply | |
| Email or fax | Send the form to the clerk; fax delivery is optional | $5 fax fee for non-voluminous results |
| Phone | Call the clerk and use Visa or Mastercard for payment | $5 search fee if no case number is supplied |
WCCA does not sell images of public documents. The clerk wants payment first before releasing results. The charge for certified or exemplified copies is not published, so ask the clerk for the current fee.
Portage County's Municipal Docket Split
Not every Portage County court record sits in WCCA. The Stevens Point/Plover Joint Municipal Court hears traffic and non-traffic ordinance cases. It serves those two cities. It keeps no records online. Call clerk Kari Jozwiak at 715-342-4054. You can also visit the municipal office at 1515 Strongs Avenue in Stevens Point. The official joint municipal court page spells out this separate local channel.

Point & Pay can find a citation you can pay. It holds no public docket archive. A date listed on a municipal citation is the initial appearance, not a trial. Charges under state traffic or criminal law go to Portage County Circuit Court instead. They reach WCCA after filing. Check which court the citation names before you search a docket.
Portage County Court Dockets by City
Stevens Point stands alone as the only incorporated city in Portage County. It serves as the county seat too. That gives it a two-court problem for docket searches. Ordinance violations belong to the joint municipal court. Circuit-level cases live at the county courthouse and on WCCA. Plover does share that municipal court. But as a village, it does not get its own city page under the incorporated-city rule.
Stevens Point Docket Search
Find the Joint Municipal Court record channel, citation lookup, initial appearance process, and the route from city cases to Portage County Circuit Court.
For municipal court records, call the clerk directly. There is no online workaround for those files. Circuit cases filed in Stevens Point run through the same Portage County docket search used across the county. Appeals move upward on two tracks: municipal decisions go to Portage County Circuit Court, and circuit decisions head to the Wisconsin Court of Appeals, District III.
Map and Directions to the Portage County Courthouse
Circuit criminal, civil, family, small claims, probate, traffic, and forfeiture files are kept at the Portage County Courthouse in Stevens Point. The Clerk of Circuit Court's office and the public-access room sit on the second floor, past the clerk's counter, and a same-day kiosk there lists circuit cases scheduled for a hearing that day. The county's court-preparation page directs every Portage circuit-court appearance to this one Church Street building.
